The Keystone Symposia Perspective on Diversity
For nearly 4 decades Keystone Symposia has been connecting members of the scientific community through conferences featuring cutting-edge research and collaborative approaches to scientific inquiry. Keystone Symposia has played a major role in the professional development of new investigators by providing opportunities to meet and interact with established, world renowned senior scientists in relaxed retreat-like settings. Such opportunities are invaluable for new scientists embarking on careers in research.
The questions and outcomes in research reflect the background and perspectives of scientists who lead and conduct this research. Keystone Symposia continues to evolve its role in the promotion of life science research by identifying and recruiting perspectives that have been largely absent from much of the life science research enterprise. A major effort in this regard focuses on underrepresented minority (URM) groups in the U.S., where a combination of socio-cultural, economic and historical factors have likely contributed to their low level of participation in the life science community.
The challenge of addressing diversity is complex and multi-faceted. At Keystone Symposia, we are focusing on those areas of diversity most closely related to our historic mission, our values and the types of contributions that we make to the scientific community and to society as a whole. The Keystone Symposia model – being a catalyst for change – is a driving force as we initiate our efforts regarding diversity in the life science research community.
